AEROSPACE group Northrop Grumman today stood accused of major accounting irregularities as it struggled to maintain good relations with the Pentagon in the 1980s.

Internal documents to be used by the US government in a lawsuit against the maker of the B-2 Stealth bomber are said to reveal questionable accounting behaviour in the final years of the Cold War when it was involved in massive contracts for President Reagan's defence build-up, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A judge is about to release files ahead of a trial that could start later this year, accusing the company of overcharging the government for radar-jamming and other defensive devices on jets including F-15 fighters and B-1 bombers.
