It has been forced to apologise and refund more than 125,000 customers who face huge bills next month because the company failed to charge for calls outside their contracted minutes.

The error, which will cost mm02 an estimated £2.2m and happened during a troublesome billing system upgrade, was revealed in Financial Mail.

Four months' worth of calls, which include those made overseas in the main holiday period and to premium rate lines, will be lumped together in November bills, handing customers a financial shock in the run-up to Christmas.

In some cases, the amount owed is three or four times customers' usual monthly payments. The company would not disclose the exact cost of the discount, but admitted an average of £18 would be knocked off bills. It has written to customers this week telling them of the mix-up.

A spokeswoman said: 'We have been migrating customers from a legacy billing system to a new one.

'During that process, a small number of customers were not charged for calls outside their usual monthly call 'bundle'.

'We apologise and as a goodwill gesture we will reduce November's total bill by 25%.'

A hotline has been set up by mm02 to help customers who might still have difficulty paying the November bill.
